Woman adding fluids to her engine in order to keep her car from overheating

If your car overheats, it is important to take action immediately. If you ignore the problem, it could lead to major engine damage. Below we have steps to address this issue and get you back on the road, safely!

Here are some tips on what to do if your car overheats:

Pull over and turn off the engine

As soon as you notice that your car is overheating, pull over and turn off the engine. In this scenario you don’t want to try to keep driving; this will only make the problem worse.

Open the hood and check the radiator

Once you’ve pulled over and turned off the engine, open the hood and check the radiator. If it is low on coolant, add more (make sure to use the correct type of coolant for your car). You can also cool the car down with any water you have on hand if you don’t have coolant readily available. You may also want to check the line for any obvious leaks. Wait about 15 minutes and try starting the car again. Make sure to pay close attention to the temperature gauge marked with an “H” at the top and a “C” at the bottom. If the needle starts rising above the middle point towards the “H” it may be time to ask for help from a tow truck.

Call a tow truck

If your car is still overheating after you’ve checked the radiator, it’s time to call a tow truck. Don’t try to drive the car if you aren’t able to come to a solution; it could cause further damage and ultimately be unsafe for anyone in the car.

Conclusion

Taking these steps will help to prevent further damage to your car and will get you back on the road as soon as possible.
