If you’re in the market for an affordable SUV, a used 2017 Chevrolet Equinox can be a smart choice. A solid version of the iconic line, the 2017 Equinox is a major player in the compact crossover market segment—even today.

In terms of size and price, the used 2017 Chevy Equinox fits between the Trax and Traverse. However, compared to crossovers of similar age, it’s significantly larger, and is one of the few to feature a V-6 engine.

Despite many upgrades and changes over the past seven years, a used Chevy Equinox from 2017 is still a solid vehicle, especially if you go with a Certified Pre-Owned. Read on for our complete buyer’s guide to this used crossover SUV.

Used 2017 Chevrolet Equinox: Features & Specs

Here’s a brief rundown of the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, including the most relevant features and specs.

Engine, transmission, & performance

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox comes with two engine options: a 2.4-L I-4 rated engine that offers 182 hp and 172 lb-ft. Additionally, the vehicle includes a 3.6-L V-6 with 301 hp and 272 lb-ft. Both engines operate with a six-speed automatic transmission and the option for both front- and all-wheel drive.

The Equinox also boasts a max towing capacity of 1,500 lbs and a max payload capacity of 1,172 lbs.

Fuel mileage

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox features a combined 25 mpg combined city highway, 21 city and an impressive 31 highway. For the budget-conscious buyer, the Equinox is a good choice as you not only save money on the front end but also pay less over time than with a gas-guzzler. However, if you opt for a vehicle with a powerful V-6 engine, that drops to 17 city and 24 highway.

Safety & driver assistance

The Chevrolet Equinox boasts a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, and was considered a 2016 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. Some vehicles come equipped with a Driver Confidence package, which includes Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Rear Park Assist. The Driver Confidence Package II includes all those features, as well as a Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning.

Trim levels

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox comes in a range of trim levels, each with its unique advantages and features: L, LS, LT, and Premier.

Style & design

There are also some distinctive changes to the Equinox’s style and design. On the exterior, these include new front-end styling and taillight graphics. On the interior, there’s a 7.0-inch color touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth support and compatibility, and a standard rearview camera.

2017 Special Editions: Midnight & Sport Edition

A used 2017 Chevy Equinox can come in a variety of colors, including the two special edition models released in 2017: the Midnight Edition and Sport Edition, both available on the LT. These models feature blacked-out exterior details, including the front grille, front and rear Chevrolet bowtie emblems, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rack cross bars, and black mirror caps.

The interior features Jet Black perforated leather seats. The Midnight Edition is finished in Mosaic Black Metallic Paint, while the Sport Edition features a Summit White exterior.

Why it’s worth it to buy a Chevrolet pre-owned vehicle

Like most vehicle manufacturers, GM offers a Certified Pre-Owned badge for their Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC logos. Not only does Certified Pre-Owned guarantee the condition of the vehicle you buy, but it also offers a benefits package to offset any concerns you may have.

All Certified Pre-Owned vehicles go through a strict evaluation process, which requires them to meet the following criteria:

  • Less than six model years of age
  • Have a maximum of 75,000 miles
  • Pass a 172-point vehicle inspection and reconditioning process
  • Clean title

Before a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is listed or sold, GM requires dealers to complete all safety recalls. What’s more, every CPO vehicle includes a free CARFAX vehicle history report (or comparable).

After you buy, CPO vehicles include a benefits package that is designed to offer you peace of mind and reduce the hassle of the ownership experience. This includes two warranties: a 6-year or 100,000-mile (whichever comes first) powertrain limited warranty, as well as a 12-month, 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty.

CPO vehicles also come standard with two maintenance visits within two years or 24,000 miles. These visits can include oil and filter changes, tire rotations, and multi-point inspections. If you change your mind, you can always exchange your CPO vehicle for a different one within three days or 150 miles from purchase.

And, as with other manufacturers, GM’s CPO program includes full Roadside Assistance for the duration of your powertrain limited warranty. Each vehicle comes equipped with OnStar hardware and is eligible for a free trial, which includes Automatic Crash Response, Advanced Diagnostics, Roadside Assistance and Turn-by-Turn Navigation.

One thing to keep in mind is that buying a CPO Chevy can only happen at a certified Chevy dealer. If you’re interested, stop by Lou Bachrodt Chevy and our team can start the process for you.
